I know I've found kernel problems with my nvidia module after kernel upgrades which sometimes seem to be solved by running "sudo depmod -a" and then rebooting .. try it. Consider what you might have brought in that effects sound. Take a look at the /var/log/dpkg* files to see if anything odd is noted.
